Job Description

 

Northern Arizona University in beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona a top college mountain town, a seeks a Data Scientist, Intermediate OR Data Scientist, Senior to lead research on North American supply chains and critical infrastructures, and in particular on the use of open-source data fusion techniques to map and model those systems. This work is engaging, inventive and consequential.

 

The work involves data science, modeling, supply chain analysis, and related software workflow development and quantitative analysis in support of the FEWSION project, a large interdisciplinary team leading data science research for strategic supply chains and related policy.

 

Data Scientist, Intermediate

 

The Data Scientist, Intermediate is responsible for analyzing, storing, and managing research data, including statistical analysis, informatics, and software design. They will obtain, organize, analyze, and transform big data into findings through statistical data analysis. The intermediate position utilizes computer and data science concepts, computational research, and development principles to contribute to research objectives. The Data Scientist, Intermediate presents data through the use of visual representations to members of a team, including non-technology professionals.

 

Data Collection – 25%

 

  • Collects raw data, explores new data sources, and builds pipelines to access those data sources.

 

Data Analysis 25%

 

  • Assists in developing new methods and algorithms to achieve research objectives, including through the investigation of relationships between disparate datasets.
  • Explores data sources to determine what data to target.
  • Investigates invisible relationship between disparate data sets.
  • Helps address key challenges by extracting insight from data.
  • Identifies patterns and trends in data.
  • Utilizes programming tools to perform data cleaning (cleansing).

 

Modeling – 25%

 

  • Helps develop algorithms and models to quality control, gap fill, extrapolate, and predict supply chain behavior using disparate data sources.
  • Assists in building and deploying predictive models to perform data analysis utilizing machine learning and other protocols.

 

Scientific Communication – 20%

 

  • Documents and communicates findings using written and verbal scientific presentation and publication methods.
  • Communicates team’s progress and findings to researchers, Principal Investigators and other research related staff utilizing data visualizations and comprehensive reports.

 

Other – 5%

 

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Data Scientist, Senior

Minimum Qualifications

 

Data Scientist, Intermediate

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, Civil Engineering, Economics, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field.
  • 2-4 years of research support experience.
  • A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.

 

Data Scientist, Senior

 

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Economics, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience inclusive of additional graduate study and training beyond the M.S.
  • A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • PhD in Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Economics, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field.
  • demonstrated excellence in data analysis, programming, visualization, and scientific writing and communication, in addition to specific experience analyzing supply chain and critical infrastructure data.

Salary

 

Data Scientist, Intermediate

 

Salary range begins at $62,996. Annual salary commensurate with candidate’s qualifications and related experience.

 

Data Scientist, Senior

 

Salary range begins at $72,445. Annual salary commensurate with candidate’s qualifications and related experience.

 

FLSA Status

 

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position.
