Position Overview:

Under the direction of the Vice President of Research and Development, conduct critical and complex research and development projects on specific units and components contributing to the total assignment or end product under development. Will specialize in the development of strength training equipment consisting of selectorized, plate loaded, free weight and/or other type equipment. Applicant will act as team leader overseeing the day-to-day assignments of the strength team. Interpret and establish engineering concepts involved and plan and organize procedures of research, development and design. Render technical assistance as team leader in the areas of design of components or units. Evaluate test results of pilot models and recommend changes to offset mechanical, electrical or other malfunctions to perfect products to the highest technological specifications. This is a supervisory position



  • Develop, mentor and lead strength team personnel
  • Perform reviews and one on one team check-ins
  • Work closely with PM team for setting project loading and priorities
  • Clearly communicate project status and scheduling gates with key stakeholders including the director of engineering
  • Work in a cross-functional team with Product Management, R&D, Global and North American quality departments and factories
  • Track the Project Engineers schedules and verify if they are staying on schedule
  • Lead team meetings and coordinate project deliverables
  • Provide work direction to lower level engineers and technicians
  • Train and lead design engineers and mechanical designers
  • Interview and hire personnel as needed

Research & Development:

  • Work with R&D team members in researching and developing engineering test specifications
  • Provide support with creating standard operating procedures
  • Conduct patent searches and create/submit invention disclosures as needed

Product Development:

  • Help team with meeting product development & material cost targets
  • Support team in developing DFMEA and control plans
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of PPS (Product Project Specifications)
  • Support for identifying, managing and identifying all compliance requirements
  • Participation in technical reviews (brainstorm sessions and design reviews)
  • Oversight of structured BOMs (Bill Of Materials)
  • Support and troubleshoot the introduction of new products, pilot builds and field tests into manufacturing
  • Coordinate with Manufacturing and Purchasing to ensure the product is producible and meets the costing requirements defined in the product specification
  • Oversight of strength and fatigue analysis of all design proposals to ensure the product meets the design requirements
  • Determine and maximize container utilization and package
  • Helps the team meet all product development milestones and deadlines
  • Works under minimal supervision; May have overall project responsibility


  • Responsible for meeting product quality requirements

Marginal Job Functions:

  • BS in Engineering and/or advanced degree


  • Supervisor or Management experience
  • At least 5-8 years of design engineer experience
  • Consumer products experience (a plus)

Other Requirements:

  • Experienced 3D CAD designer (Solid Works preferred)
  • Proficient in Microsoft office suite
  • Ability and willingness to travel both internationally and domestically
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups and individuals
  • Ability to communicate using alternate methods when language barriers are present (use of translation software, PowerPoint, sketches and drawings, hand gestures, etc.)
