DESCRIPTION:

Humboldt State University’s School of Education invites applications for one full time tenure track position with expertise in undergraduate teaching and teacher preparation in elementary education.

RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS:

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An earned doctorate in education or a related field with an emphasis in the disciplines aligned with teacher preparation in elementary education is preferred at the time of appointment. Applicants progressing towards degree completion by appointment date will be considered. A minimum of three years or equivalent of full-time K-8 school teaching experience in schools and communities that serve students from diverse linguistic, ethnic, or socioeconomic backgrounds is required.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:

• Potential for effective teaching using a variety of methodologies;

• Ability and/or interest in teaching a broad range of courses (e.g., undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and

Masters);

• Knowledge of/experience in teacher preparation programs;

• Ability to work effectively with diverse students, parents, colleagues, staff, and others in the community; &

• Commitment and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals

from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

• Preference will be given to those with expertise in special education, literacy, bilingual education, science or social science;

• demonstrated success in teaching undergraduate and post-graduate students and student teaching supervision experience at the university level;

• experience with online teaching; and

• record of, or potential for, research and scholarship.

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES:

Duties may include teaching courses in the Liberal Studies Elementary Education and Elementary Education Credential programs; teaching other undergraduate or graduate courses within the candidate’s areas of expertise; providing clinical supervision of credential candidates; chairing the thesis/project committees of graduate students who are pursuing a M.A. in Education; taking a leadership role in programs within the School of Education; and participating in relevant scholarly, creative, and professional service activities.

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching; research, scholarship and creative activity; and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions including assessment of learning. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities required for retention, tenure and promotion.

From its beginning as a Normal School in 1913 to HSU’s credential programs today, the University has been continuously involved in the preparation of education professionals. The School of Education consists of the LSEE ITP program, four credential programs (Administrative Services, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Special Education), and a M.A. in Education. The LSEE ITP program offers an undergraduate degree which includes a teaching credential with an emphasis on applied learning. Humboldt State University has excellent working relationships with regional schools and has prepared many of the local teachers, administrators, and school psychologists.
