THE UNIVERSITY

FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in service to the department, school, and community. Sonoma State is committed to the Teacher/Scholar model and places an emphasis on faculty support of undergraduate research. THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Biology offers B.A., B.S. and M.S. degrees and has 12 tenured or tenure-track faculty members who conduct research in a wide range of disciplines, including cell biology, ecology, environmental microbiology, evolutionary genetics, marine biology, molecular immunology and physiology. The Department has a core genomics facility, facilities for cell culture, three greenhouses, and a recirculating seawater system. In addition to research instruments housed in the Department, Biology faculty members also have access to the Keck Microanalysis Laboratory, which houses a laser scanning confocal imaging system and a scanning electron microscope. Sonoma State University is home to the Center for Environmental Inquiry, which manages Galbreath Wildlands Preserve (3,670 acres), Fairfield Osborn Preserve (450 acres) and Los Guillicos Preserve (40 acres). Faculty members also collaborate with scientists at other universities, nature preserves, field stations, and nearby marine laboratories to achieve their teaching and research goals. DUTIES OF THE POSITION

The Department of Biology at Sonoma State University seeks a highly motivated and productive scientist for a tenure-track faculty position in the broadly defined area of molecular biology. We are particularly interested in candidates employing non-vertebrate model organisms in research with a focus on areas such as, but not limited to, cell signaling, neurobiology, microbiomes, host‐parasite interactions, or synthetic biology. The successful candidate must have a proven track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals and will be expected to develop and maintain an externally funded research program as well as attract and mentor students in graduate research. We seek a dynamic teacher-scholar with a strong commitment to undergraduate education and the ability to mentor students in our Molecular and Cellular Biology concentration, many of whom have career aspirations in biotechnology and biomedical fields. Teaching responsibilities may include contributions to introductory, upper-division, and graduate level courses in molecular and cell biology. The candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to other courses, which could include an offering in their area of specialty.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:

A Ph.D. in the biological sciences or related field and post-doctoral research experience, expertise in molecular biology, and teaching and student mentoring experience at the undergraduate level.

To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, creative achievement and professional development; service to the University; and public service and service to the community. Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that “the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).” Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.

RANK AND SALARY

Salary and service credit depends upon academic preparation and professional experience. The salary for this position is $76,385.
