The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as the primary speechwriter for the Chancellor and lead a small team of writers to support speechwriting for the Chancellor’s senior leadership team.
The incumbent is responsible for preparing original, professional, effective, and compelling high-profile communications that are relevant on local, regional, and national platforms and capture the vision and message of the University. The incumbent will write, edit, and produce content for speeches, talking points, presentations, keynote addresses and other remarks of significance on behalf of the Chancellor. The incumbent will tailor communications, as necessary, to address audiences of various constituencies and industries. As such, the incumbent will be charged with engaging and cultivating relationships with numerous constituencies including, but not limited to, University leadership, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and critical external stakeholders to understand the viewpoints and dynamics of these populations.
The incumbent serves as a critical member of the Office of University Communications team and is embedded in the Office of the Chancellor communications. The incumbent will manage competing priorities of the speechwriting team and their client work. This incumbent is expected to transform complex concepts into clear and meaningful remarks and will perform research and verify content. The incumbent must also demonstrate the ability to meet strict deadlines and handle sensitive, confidential information.
The Director of Executive Speechwriting will be expected to conduct all responsibilities with the highest degree of professionalism, formality, and sensitivity. As well, the incumbent must demonstrate the ability to manage the challenges of supporting senior level personnel, exercising flexibility and efficiency at all times.

Master’s degree preferred in English, journalism, communications, political science, business, or a related field and 10+ years of successful experience in speechwriting and executive communications is required.Experience in a higher education environment is preferred.
Exceptional verbal and written communication, grammar, logic, and organizational skills required.Must demonstrate strong leadership, strategic planning, and project management skills.
