POSITION OVERVIEW: The Department of Sociology at Humboldt State University (HSU) invites applications for an academic year tenure-track faculty position in Criminology & Justice Studies (CJS). Areas of expertise are open; however, we will be looking for candidates with a teaching and research focus on inequalities of race, class, gender, and/or sexuality, in relationship to justice. The major is interdisciplinary: core and elective CJS courses in this social justice and action-oriented major are complemented by electives from Anthropology; Critical Race, Gender, & Sexuality Studies; Ethnic Studies; Film; Journalism; Native American Studies; Philosophy; Politics; Sociology; and Women’s Studies.

RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS: We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor rank; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Ph.D. in Justice Studies, Sociology, Criminology or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred at the time of appointment. Applicants with considerable progress toward doctoral completion by appointment date will be considered. Completion of the Ph.D. is required before the start of the second probationary year following the initial appointment.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
• Commitment to critical criminology;
• Experience and/or preparation to teach major core courses as well as graduate level courses;
• Evidence of creating successful inclusive learning environments;
• Commitment to contribute to the departments’ mission to support underrepresented students;
• Potential for effective teaching or teaching experience using a variety of methodologies;
• Willingness to participate in the development of online learning experiences and use of online instructional technologies;
• Willingness to participate in professional development activities especially toward inclusive and equitable pedagogies;
• Record of, or potential for, involving students in research and scholarly activity; and
• Ability to work well with others.

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates must be committed to teaching excellence and engaged pedagogy. The new faculty member, in addition to teaching courses in their area of expertise, must be prepared to teach core courses including Introduction to Criminology and Justice Studies, Inequalities/Criminalization, Law and Society and/or Criminological & Justice Theory. They will also rotate into courses at the graduate level including quantitative or qualitative methods. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching; research, scholarship and creative activity; and service to the university, profession, and community. Responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. Probationary faculty members are provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities required for retention, tenure, and promotion.
Humboldt State also continues to build unique and innovative learning opportunities for students, bridging the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. HSU is a leader in “learning communities” that build relationships between students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the community. These communities incorporate environmental and social responsibility.
DEPARTMENT AND UNIVERSITY: The Department of Sociology offers a BA in Sociology, a BA in Criminology and Justice Studies, and an MA in Public Sociology. We are a growing Department of almost 400 undergraduate and graduate students. We are one of the largest departments in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and one of the most diverse departments on campus. About two-thirds of the students in our programs identify as students of color, first-generation college students, and/or Pell Grant recipients.
Both BA degrees in our Department include a rigorous core of theory and methods, service learning, writing intensive courses, professional development seminar, and two capstone options. The BA in CJS requires major electives in four knowledge areas: inequalities & crime; law; justice & policy; and research & action. The MA program offers students two experience options: teaching sociology and practicing sociology. We enroll 25-30 graduate students annually with new cohorts of 8-12 joining the Department each year.
Humboldt State University sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi’ni (over in the woods). The Humboldt State University campus in Northern California is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities. Humboldt State currently has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and has over 30 Native American faculty and staff, many from local area California Indian tribes. HSU is home to a number of leading Native American programs including the Indian Tribal Education and Personnel Program (ITEPP) and the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP). There are also many opportunities at HSU to conduct research, teaching and community work on Native American history and cultures, with resources in Special Collections at the HSU library. The Humboldt Room in the Library has fantastic resources for tribally focused archive materials from the region.
