Job Description:
Position Summary
Under direction, inspects, maintains, trouble shoots, repairs and tests District and Bridge Division vehicles and equipment. Performs safety inspections and preventive maintenance, record keeping and written verification of work accomplished as required and performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities
• Effects major rebuilding, repair and/or removal and replacement of mechanical components on vehicles and equipment, including engines, transmission, clutches, differentials, pumps, motors, cylinder heads, compressors, hydraulic brake systems, air systems, steering systems, air conditioning systems, electrical systems and associated parts
• Maintains and repairs a variety of vehicles and equipment including tow trucks, lane diversion trucks, dump trucks, pick-up trucks, sedans, crane trucks, aerial tower trucks, forklifts, loaders, sweepers, scrubbers, shop mules, towing tractors, scooters, welding machines and miscellaneous small equipment such as chain saws, concrete saws, pumps and generators
• Provides minor and incidental repairs to vehicles and equipment in general, including manufacture and/or repair of components to maintain equipment
• Accomplishes on-going preventive maintenance inspection and procedures
• Responsible for normal and reasonable care of all District owned property and tools provided
• Knows and follows the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to his or her job
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors and all others contacted during the course of work using principles of excellent customer service
• Performs additional related duties as assigned
• Regular and reliable attendance and performance is required
Minimum Qualifications
• Completion of an approved four-year apprenticeship program OR four-years’ full time experience repairing two and four cycle air cooled engines, gasoline engines/diesel engines, automatic transmissions, air brakes, differentials and DC electrical systems. Gas and arc welding experience is desirable
• Must have an experience in the operation of machine tools common to repair shops, such as grinders, drill press, valve facers, lathes, boring bars, presses, etc.
• Candidates holding A.S.E. certification are encouraged to apply
Required Tools:
At the time of employment, a new hire must obtain and maintain a complete set of hand tools to accomplish assigned work.
Required License:
• Must Obtain A Class A or B License during 6-Month Probationary Period
• Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
• No reckless driving and DUI infractions within the last 7 years
• No more than 2 moving violations within the last 3 years. Operates District vehicles on a regular basis
• California Smog license (Emissions Basic) is desirable
Physical Requirements:
Frequent bending, pushing, reaching and kneeling. Must be able to lift 50 pounds frequently. Exposure to various chemicals used in the course of work. Work around fumes, odors, and dust in an occasionally high noise level environment with appropriate personal protective equipment. Working inside and outside in all weather conditions
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
• Occupational health and safety rules and working practices applicable to this position.
• Steering systems, electrical, air hydraulic brake systems, and power train systems including knowledge and experience with internal combustion powered vehicles.
Skill in or Ability to:
• Diagnose and repair electronic ignitions and smog components; recent California E.B. certification preferred.
• Troubleshoot diagnose, repair and/or replace components common to automotive equipment.
• Work closely and cooperatively with Bridge Division and Shop Department personnel.
• Read complex repair information and communicate orally and in writing with co-workers and supervisors.
• Operate machine tools common to repair shops such as grinders, drill presses, valve facers, lathes, boring bars and presses.
• Dismount and repair truck tires and up to 1100 x 20 tube, and 1100-22.5 tube-less tires.
• Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office) for use in material requests, work orders, research, state and local material compliances and District communications • Communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
• Work with hydraulic system and diesel power equipment.
