The University of Pittsburgh’s Computing Services and Systems Development (CSSD) department is seeking a Network Engineer.This technical position is responsible for facilitating continuity of service for the University’s data network. Primary responsibilities include the analysis and planning of enterprise network technologies delivering data, voice, and video to the University of Pittsburgh. The incumbent will work as part of a team, troubleshooting problems with the network infrastructure including firewalls.

Additionally, the incumbent will test, maintain, and evaluate the status of network infrastructure equipment utilizing monitoring tools. The incumbent will respond to alerts and faults generated by the monitoring systems and investigate each problem to determine its cause and take appropriate steps with co-workers and management to resolve faults as quickly as possible on a proactive basis. In addition, they will make recommendations for purchasing applications and equipment to improve the infrastructure. The incumbent will also be responsible for consistently preparing documentation regarding problem analysis for any network problems including outages. Outages that are observable by the University community will be a priority and this position is responsible for determining the cause of the outage, take appropriate steps to resolve the problem or escalate and document the cause and resolution. The incumbent must possess excellent technical knowledge of networking concepts. Position requires work on rotating shift schedule including weekends and holidays as assigned. Must be willing to work day, evening, and night shifts as required to support a 24-hour, seven-day operation.

This position must collaborate closely with co-workers, management, and other CSSD areas to proactively resolve potential problems that may lead to system performance degradation or failures. The incumbent is also required to work on project teams to implement new services and enhance existing services and assist with vendor evaluation to determine the applicability of potential service enhancements.

Degree in CS, IS, Engineering or related field preferred (or the equivalent in experience). Some knowledge of data and telecommunication technologies including Ethernet, switching technologies, WAN, LAN, firewalls, SANs, MPLS, OSPF, TCP/IP, fiber optics, and wireless. Operational experience with enterprise/carrier-class routers and switches (Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, Avaya,) is desirable. Experience with troubleshooting network routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, ISIS, and MPLS) is helpful. Operational experience with security engineering, intrusion detection, and firewalls. Experience working with an established change management process for highly available enterprise networks.

Candidate must be proficient in the troubleshooting and implementation of network technologies including Ethernet, Firewalls, DNS, Video, Voice, VOIP, TCP/IP and other transport protocols. Cisco CCNA certification required, Cisco CCNP or CCIE certification desirable. The successful candidate must have clearly demonstrated the ability to achieve stated goals and have very strong problem solving skills. Excellent professional communication and interpersonal skills are required.
