Job Description:

The Verge’s science team is looking for a Space Reporter, and we’d love for you to join us! We’re looking for someone interested in keeping up with the fast-paced realm of space who can maintain The Verge’s industry-leading coverage. Whether reporting on distant galaxies, exploding rockets, or imploding space startups, space stories are a core part of The Verge’s coverage. We’re all about the future, and humanity is increasingly becoming tied to the skies above us, with satellites intimately connected to our gadgets and billions of dollars pouring into efforts to get commercial space companies off the ground. Discoveries in space also help shape our perspective of our place in the universe through pictures of distant galaxies, data on black holes, and our increasing exploration of our familiar rocks of the solar system.

We’re looking for a science reporter mostly focused on the space beat. As a space reporter, you’ll be expected to cover developments in spaceflight, science missions and research, and new discoveries related to space. They’ll be able to keep tabs on what’s going on in businesses like SpaceX, Blue Origin, as well as how space policy and other developments in space affect people’s lives here on Earth.

The job will involve reporting in a mix of formats, with longer, deeper reporting publishing at least once a week and shorter stories publishing about once a day. You will have the opportunity to be involved with our social and science video teams. Working quickly and accurately is essential. You should be able to recognize the difference between a general topic and a good story and figure out which format offers the best way to tell that story for our audience.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Come up with fresh, sharp angles on space news and keep the team aware of major developments that are relevant to The Verge’s audience
  • Report news out as necessary, on tight deadlines, which includes making calls, asking tough questions, and pursuing a story aggressively
  • Approach learning from your editors with openness and enthusiasm

WHO YOU ARE

  • Proven track record covering the science and business of space, particularly on news or breaking stories
  • Strong storytelling capabilities, and the ability to tell the difference between a story and a topic
  • The demonstrated ability to transform scientific studies and complex ideas into interesting and understandable stories, with an eye toward the audience’s interests and needs
  • An interest in our other coverage areas, and a willingness to find the science story in entertainment, transportation, or technology

Nice to have, but not required:

  • 3+ years reporting in the science space
  • Experience on camera

If you think you have what it takes, but don’t meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch!
